Consonant Blends: Full List + How to Teach Them

Consonant blends are two or three consonants side by side where each letter keeps its own sound. Unlike digraphs (where two letters make one new sound), blends let you hear every consonant — just fast and close together. This single distinction unlocks hundreds of 4- and 5-letter words once a child has CVC words solid.

Blends vs digraphs — quick recap

  • Digraph:ch, sh, th, ph — two letters, ONE new sound. You can’t hear individual letters.
  • Blend: bl, st, cr, str — each consonant stays itself, blended together. You can still hear each sound.

L-blends (14 words each)

  • bl — black, blank, blast, bleed, blend, bless, blind, block, blood, bloom, blow, blue, blade, blame.
  • cl — clam, clap, class, claw, clay, clean, clerk, click, cliff, clip, clock, close, cloud, clue.
  • fl — flag, flat, flaw, flea, flick, flip, flock, flood, floor, flop, flow, fly, flame, flake.
  • gl — glad, glare, glass, gleam, glide, gloom, gloss, glow, glue, gland, glint, globe, glove, glee.

3-letter (triple) blends

  • scr — scrap, scratch, scream, screen, screw, script, scrub, scroll.

When to teach blends

Blends come after single consonants and digraphs are solid — typically around the end of kindergarten or early Grade 1. A child who can reliably decode CVC words like cat, sit, hop and knows digraphs is ready for blends.

Drill one column per week. After 6 weeks your child will have every common initial blend. Final blends can layer in during the same period — they’re often easier because kids hear them clearly at the end of a word.
