Vowel teams (also called vowel digraphs) are two vowels that work together to make one sound — like the ea in beach or the oa in boat. They come after digraphs and magic-e in most phonics sequences, and they’re the trickiest part of English spelling because the same pair can say different sounds, and the same sound can be spelled different ways.

Long A vowel teams: ai and ay
Both make the /eɪ/ sound. The golden rule: ai goes in the middle of a word; ay goes at the end.
Think of it as: ay stands at the door, ai sits inside.

Five different spellings for /iː/. Teach ee first (most consistent), then ea (most common but has exceptions), then the others.

ea = /ɛ/ exception words (teach separately)

Tip:Present the /ɛ/ ea words as a named group — “bread-head-dead” cluster. Kids remember labeled exceptions better than unlabeled surprises.
ie = /iː/ words
achieve, belief, brief, chief, field, fierce, grief, niece, piece, pierce, relief, retrieve, shield, shriek, siege, thief, yield.
ei = /iː/ words (after c)
ceiling, conceit, conceive, deceive, perceive, receipt, receive.
The rule: i before e, except after c. Only applies to the /iː/ sound — neighbor and weigh use ei but say /eɪ/.
ey = /iː/ words (usually unstressed syllable)
abbey, alley, chimney, donkey, honey, jockey, key, monkey, money, parsley, turkey, valley, volley.
Long O vowel teams: oa and ow
Same rule as ai/ay: oa sits in the middle; ow stands at the end when it says /oʊ/. But watch out — ow also says /aʊ/ (as in cow). See the diphthongs post for the /aʊ/ ow words.

How to teach vowel teams: the 4-step sequence
- One team per lesson.Don’t mix ai and ay in the same sitting. One team, one lesson. Two lessons later, do a comparison sort.
- Sort first, read second.Give 10 cards. Sort into “ai words” and “other words.” Sorting activates pattern recognition faster than reading alone.
- Teach the position rule explicitly. Children who learn the rule make 60% fewer spelling errors than those who just memorise lists.
- Dictation with 5 words per session. Say the word; child writes it. Correct spelling encodes the visual pattern.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
- rain → rane / rayn. Kids who know magic-e try a-e first. Show how ai produces the same /eɪ/ sound without a silent e at the end.
- meat → meet.Both are real words. Teach meaning alongside spelling from day one. “You eat meat; your feet meetthe floor.”
- oo confusion — reading book as /uː/. Use the two-oo chant until the short-oo words become automatic by visual memory.
- receive → recieve.The i-before-e rule only applies after c for the /iː/ sound. Chant: “i before e, except after c.”
