Word families (also called rime families or phonogram families) group words that share an ending pattern — like -at (cat, hat, mat) or -ip(dip, sip, trip). They’re the most efficient bridge between knowing individual letter sounds and reading real text, because a child who can read cat can immediately read every other -at word by swapping the first sound.

This page lists the 23 most useful word families — covering all 5 short vowels — with 8–20 words each.

The 37 most common rime families in English

Research by Wylie and Durrell (1970) identified 37 phonograms that appear in nearly 500 primary-grade words. Knowing these 37 rimes unlocks most of the decodable reading vocabulary a child needs through Grade 2.

Why word families work

When a child reads cat and then encounters that, their brain doesn’t decode t-h-a-t from scratch. It pattern-matches the -at chunk and only needs to process the onset (th-). This is called analogy reading — using a known pattern as a decoding shortcut.

Word families teach onsets (the consonant or blend before the vowel) and rimes (the vowel + everything after it) as separable chunks. Kids who master 15–20 rime families read fluently by mid-kindergarten.

5 word-family activities for home

  1. Slide the onset. Write the rime (-at) on a card. Hold it still. Slide letter cards past the front: c-at, h-at, m-at, fl-at. Read each new word.
  2. Family sort. Mix 20 cards from 3 families (-at, -in, -og). Sort into piles. Time the sort each day and track improvement.
  3. Rhyme chain.Start with a word. Child says a rhyming word. You say another. Keep the chain going until someone can’t add a new one.
  4. Make-a-word board. Write 5 rimes across the top. Supply onset letter cubes. Child rolls a cube and makes as many words as possible in 2 minutes.
  5. Rhyme hunt.Open a picture book. Find words that belong to today’s family. Highlight or tap the rime chunk as you read.

Teaching sequence

Start with the families that unlock the most words. The top 6 by word count:

  1. -at (bat, cat, hat…) — 12 words + blends like flat, that
  2. -ip (dip, hip, trip…) — 19 words including blends
  3. -an (can, man, plan…) — 12 words
  4. -op (hop, stop, drop…) — 14 words
  5. -ug (bug, mug, shrug…) — 14 words
  6. -in (bin, spin, thin…) — 15 words

Introduce one family every 2–3 days. Revisit all known families weekly with a speed sort to keep them automatic.

Once word families are solid, move on to magic-e words and then vowel teams to expand decoding power to longer, more complex words.
